Top 5 Tips for a Perfect Proposal

I’m a sucker for romance. There are few things more romantic than a marriage proposal.

Since most couples get engaged during the holidays, if you’re thinking of popping the question, or know someone who is, feel free to share these tips.

1. Before you propose, you and your love should talk about marriage. Although the proposal should be a surprise, you should expect her – or him – to say yes. More importantly, you are asking someone to share your life so it’s a good idea to find out if you share the same expectations for your future together.

2. Have the engagement ring ready. Your beloved may have been dropping hints as to a favorite style, or maybe you two picked it out together. Completely lost? Ask a best friend or sister – but only if she’s good at keeping secrets.

3. I may get into lots of hot water for saying this, but I don’t think asking for a father’s blessing is mandatory. I do think it may be a nice gesture. If you think it’s important to your significant other or her parents, then absolutely talk to them. You don’t want to be in hot water with your in-laws before the wedding even takes place!

4. Pick the perfect spot for her. If you’re choosing a public proposal, be absolutely, positively sure that she will love it. Just because you would love it, does not mean your beloved will. That does not mean you can’t propose in a public place, just not in the middle of a ballgame with the scoreboard flashing “Will You Marry Me?”

Consider a spot that’s special for the both of you – where you met, first date, first kiss, a romantic vacation maybe walking on the beach in the moonlight or high up in a hot air balloon. Make it a fun proposal like a scavenger hunt, or an adventure hiking up to a summit (*ahem* that’s where Michael proposed to me). Get creative. There are millions of ideas, find one that’s perfect for you two.

5. Consider getting a photographer or even a videographer. If you do, make sure there’s a good place for your photographer to hide. Consider the available light when you propose. There’s nothing less romantic than a flash. Don’t feel pressured to have every second of your proposal documented. It’s OK not to have a photographer. You can always take a quick selfie after you pop the question. Believe me, she’ll remember the proposal forever.

Good luck!

And if you’re already engaged or married, I’d love to hear your proposal stories!!!
